For the first time in Thailand, Christie’s, the world’s leading auction house, presents ‘The Bag Of Legends’, a showcase of one of only five original prototypes of Jane Birkin’s legendary handbag. A true symbol of 70s style and cultural influence, Birkin’s story is unveiled through this iconic creation, offering visitors an intimate glimpse into fashion history. The exhibition will be on display until Oct 5 at EM Gallery 1, Emporium.
The exhibition also presents, for the very first time, Jane Birkin’s treasured Haut à Courroies (HAC) bag. Belonging to the iconic British actress and singer of the 70s-80s, the bag was not only her constant travel companion but also inspired late Hermès chairman Jean-Louis Dumas to create what would later become the Birkin bag — an object of desire that continues to captivate the world. Following its debut in Bangkok, the HAC will travel to Tokyo before going under the hammer in Paris in November, offering collectors a once-in-a-lifetime chance to acquire one of the rarest prototypes in existence.
‘The Bag Of Legends’ tells stories of the iconic bag through four key chapters. ‘Roots & Heritage’ traces the origins of the Haut à Courroies (HAC), first created in 1892 as a rider’s bag and the foundation of the Hermès legacy. ‘Inspiration & Evolution’ follows its journey from equestrian gear to an emblem of refined travel. ‘Jane & Serge: A Shared Journey’ explores how the HAC became part of Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg’s life in 70s Paris. Finally, ‘From HAC To Birkin: The Genesis Of An Icon’ reveals how the Birkin bag was born from the HAC’s very structure, transforming into one of the most coveted fashion pieces in the world.
